Sarah Beckett Memorial Run

The Sarah Beckett Memorial Run is a 5km family run and walk which raises money for local non-profit organizations in the Western Communities. This event takes place locally in Langford BC and a virtual event is also available for those who are unable to attend the local run/walk.

This event is in memory of Cst Sarah Beckett, a Police Officer from the West Shore RCMP Detachment, who was killed in the line of duty on April 5, 2016.

2023 Sarah Beckett Memorial Run

On May 13th, 2023, the third Sarah Beckett Memorial Run took place at Starlight Stadium in Langford BC. It was a beautiful sunny day as approximately 500 participants took part locally and virtually in the event!

The organizing committee was proud to present a cheque of $20,000 to BGC South Vancouver Island and $5000 to the Goldstream Food Bank. Community support and sponsorships allowed for the support of two valuable non-profit organizations in our community.

2021 Sarah Beckett Memorial Run

On May 8, 2021, the Sarah Beckett Memorial Run was organized but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a virtual event was organized with over 700 participants from across Canada and the United States. As a result of the virtual event, a donation of $17,500 was made to BGC South Vancouver Island (Formerly the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Victoria). Here is an example of the difference the BGCSVI outreach team could make in our community with the support from this event:
- 5 youth in SD62 became more engaged in school, regularly attending class with positive academic performance
- 3 youth experienced a significant decrease in anxiety, enabling them to find and keep a job
- 4 youth learned healthy coping skills and no longer engage in self-harm
- 5 youth experienced improved confidence and self-esteem, becoming more self-aware and willing to share their feelings and talk about their “lived experience”
- 11 youth and their families experienced less hunger on weekends with food security support through the outreach team
- 7 youth found a sense of purpose and belonging by volunteering in a cat socialization program
- Many other youth express decreased suicidal ideations

A second donation of $2,500 was made to the Goldstream Foodbank, which went toward helping families in the Western Communities through funding food hampers.

2019 Sarah Beckett Memorial Run

On April 13, 2019, the first annual Sarah Beckett Memorial Run took place in Langford BC. Over 900 participants took place in the local event as well as the virtual event and a donation of $20,000 was presented to the Capital Regional District Traffic Safety Commission.

This donation went toward the Cst. Sarah Beckett Memorial Scholarship, an annual scholarship awarded to a post-secondary student based on their demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, community service record, and an expressed interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. In 2019, two scholarships were awarded to very deserving candidates and continue to be awarded every year.
